Research Interest:

I am a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist with an interest in substance initiation and progression to abuse during adolescence. I was one of only five candidates selected to participate in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/National Institute on Drug Abuse Physician Scientist in Substance Abuse K12 research training program. As part of my participation in that program, I conducted three novel investigations among adolescent marijuana users: 1) a marijuana cue reactivity study; 2) a laboratory study of dronabinol (oral THC); and 3) a pilot clinical trial of N-acetylcysteine. I have since initiated a randomized trial of N-acetylcysteine as a treatment for cannabis dependence in adolescents. I also conduct investigations focusing on nicotine dependence. I recently completed a large-scale randomized trial of bupropion SR and contingency management in nicotine-dependent adolescents, and a pilot trial of varenicline and bupropion XL in adolescent smokers. I am also investigating menstrual cycle effects on craving and cessation treatment among women smokers.
