Research Interest:

I have a strong background in transplantation immunology, with extensive training and expertise in the biology of bone marrow transplantation. Since starting as a post-doctoral fellow in 1994 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, my research focused on the biology of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The ultimate goal of these studies is to prevent or treat GVHD while preserving GVL effect, which could greatly enhance the therapeutic potential of BMT. I have published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers in high impact journals including JCI, Blood, EMBO and JI. In vast majority of those papers, I served as either the first or last author. I have made contributions to the following research areas: 1) Regulation of T-cell mediated GVHD and GVL through costimulation and adhesion; 2) Biology of regulation T cells and their potential application in the control of GVHD; 3) T-cell differentiation and GVHD development; and 4) Control of GVHD development by targeting protein kinases essential for T-cell survival and function.
